Slut Walk in Kolkata after Delhi
South Kolkata was treated to an unfamiliar genre of protest with girls in provocative clothes and painted cheeks and boys with anti-teasing slogans walking the streets as part of Kolkata’s first SlutWalk today. After similar protests in Delhi, Mumbai and Bhopal over the past year, almost 150 students started the “Haato Duschoritro” from Jadavpur University and till Triangular Park near Gariahat.“We are trying to make an impact on our patriarchal society, which blames women for all kinds of gender-related violence. We need to change this mentality,” said Aditya Narayan Chatterjee, an organising committee member.
Some, however, were not too happy to see such a parade. “This is unbearable, girls in such clothes marching down the streets is unacceptable,” said a bystander near Gariahat.Rimi B Chatterjee, a teacher of the English department of Jadavpur University, who participated in the SlutWalk, said, “We are making a ruckus and getting reactions. Unless you break the walls of silence nothing productive can be done.”
