Rise and Fall of ‘Yuvraj’ in UP politics
With the results of Uttar Pradesh election 2012, the people of UP announced the winner of the battle Rahul Gandhi vs Akhilesh Yadav. The Samajwadi Party emerged as the largest party in the state winning 224 seats of 403 seat assembly with Akhilesh Yadav son of Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav emerging as the youth leader.
Rahul Gandhi who went to the UP with all his guns blazing leading his party from the front was just not able turn the fortunes for his party. He went to every part of the state for campaigning his party’s candidates by Helicopter, walked hundred of miles to connect to the people, traveled thousands of kilometers in bus but nothing seemed enough for UP voters. Even his mother and the AINC president Sonia Gandhi went among people of the India’s largest state but even she couldn’t shield the party from the defeat. Sister Priyanka Gandhi and her hubby Robert Vadra too jumped in the campaigning for Amethi and Raebareli but that didn’t ensure any positives for the party.
But criticizing Congress and Rahul gandhi doesn’t present the full picture of UP politics as all other parties BJP, BSP and others were too on the loosing side. While BJP got 4 less seats from the 2007 elections, BSP who got 206 seats in the last elections didn’t even got 90 this time. Comparing these parties with the congress, the later has bettered their figures this time.
The prime factor of these party’s falling in the state is the new youth icon Akhilesh Yadav with whom the ‘aam aadmi’ could connect and gave a clear majority to form the govt. Akhilesh Yadav, the new face of SP lead his party to the victory irrespective of the general conviction the experts and opinions. He went to the campaigning with issues of corruption and development which has left the people of Uttar Pradesh reeling. He took choppers, cycle, buses and even walked to reach every single native of the state.
But winning in the elections is just the one step for the Akhilesh Yadav and his party. He have to clear his party’s image in the next 5 years. SP has been regarded as the party of ‘gundas’ and even has failed to control the law and order situation in their previous term. With Elephant going back to the jungle, hand fractured and lotus withered, cycle has to go thousand of miles for the development and maintain peace in the state.
