Sonia recommend Pranab Mukherjee for President
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will be the UPA’s presidential candidate, said alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Today in Delhi. Sonia Gandhi made the announcement after a meeting of UPA leaders at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s residence.
The announcement is a rebuttal to Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, who wanted APJ Abdul Kalam as president.
Congress president Sonia made the announcement saying Pranab had to his credit ratings a “long and distinguished record of public service for five decades”.
Sonia said he experienced broad support for holding the country’s top post.
The UPA also appealed to all political parties, MPs and members of state assemblies to extend support for the candidature of Pranab.
The UPA will need the support of Samajwadi Party (SP) and the BSP to elect Pranab as president. The BJP-led NDA is expected to announce its presidential candidate.
