According to reports, Sushma Swaraj says that the UPA government had “vetted” the coal scam probe status report before its submission in the Supreme Court.

“This is a very serious matter. This is evidence of the government’s pressure on the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) to save the Prime Minister,” Sushma Swaraj said on Twitter.

According to reports claimed that Law Minister Ashwani Kumar and officials of the Prime Minister’s Office had vetted the CBI’s probe status report of Coal scam submitted before the Supreme Court last month.

Arun Jaitley, BJP senior leader demanded an SIT probe into the coal scam, saying, “UPA is a rogue government which will not allow CBI to operate independently.”

The Law Minister had summoned top CBI officials, including director Ranjit Sinha, ahead of the filing of the status report in the Supreme Court, source said.

During the meeting, Law Minister and his subordinates, it was suggested to the CBI to tone down the report and make several amendments. some also incorporated by the CBI.

Last year, The CAG had exposed that the lack of transparency in the allocation of coal blocks to private players resulted in the loss of a whopping Rs 1.85 lakh crore ($37 billion) to the exchequer as on March 11, 2011.

The Supreme Court on Today dismissed Swiss pharma giant Novartis AG’s plea for getting its blood cancer drug Glivec patented in India.

According to the Indian law, the drug was unable to qualify for a patent, held the apex court. The court expressed that patents can be granted only in the case of genuine inventions.

Novartis has been battling the case since 2006 to win an Indian patent for their adjusted way of Glivec drug for blood cancer treatment.

Novartis had reached the Supreme court challenging the order of Chennai-based Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB), which had previously refused its appeal against patent department’s decision on the drug.

The Comptroller General of Patent and Design had refused patent to Glivec on several reasons such as its failure to meet stipulations under sections 3 (d) and 3 (b) of the Indian Patent Law.

The section 3 (d) restricts patents for already known drugs unless the new claims are better in terms of efficacy while Section 3 (b) restricts the patents for products that are against public interest and do not demonstrate enhanced efficacy over existing products.
